How to Celebrate Bastille Day on the Riviera
By Kelly Cronin
Bastille Day is celebrated annually across France on July 14th. The holiday marks the start of the French Revolution in 1789 with the storming of Bastille. Since the holiday takes place in the middle of July, it is known to be the heart of summer vacation for French, causing a lot of celebration. If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in France during the summer holiday, you will have plenty of ways to celebrate. Here’s a list of 14 things to do for Bastille Day on the French Riviera:
1. Watch the parade
Head to Nice and watch the annual traditional military parade.
2. Go to the beach
The beaches are packed with families celebrating, drinking and taking in the July heat. Here are some of our favorites.
3. Do some shopping
During July, les soldes are happening everywhere, so head to your favorite store and enjoy the AC while doing some shopping.
4. Party at Anjuna
Soak up the sun while dancing, drinking and eating at the beach bar Anjuna in Èze.
5. Take a cruise
You can hire a boat for the day and enjoy cruising around the Mediterranean while celebrating in style.
6. Enjoy the views on a rooftop bar
Sometimes the best part about celebrating is watching the celebrations from above! Head to a rooftop bar (we love La Terrasse du Plaza) to take it all in.
7. Go island hopping in Cannes
Take the day off to explore the two islands in Cannes with lovely beaches, vineyards and more.
8. Stroll through Nice old town and Cours Saleya
Wander through the little streets of Nice and stop in boutiques, grab a drink at one of the many restaurants and bars or enjoy the hustle and bustle of the market in Cours Saleya.
9. Have a picnic at Castle Hill
Find some shade and have a picnic on top of Castle Hill with stunning views of the Promenade des Anglais and Nice port.
10. Watch the sunset in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat
Choose a quieter celebration and watch the sunset on one of the beaches on the beautiful Saint Jean Cap Ferrat.
11. Check out the water show in Cannes
Catch the waterfront pyrotechnics held annually at night in Cannes for the holiday.
12. Ooh and Awe at the fireworks
All along the Riviera you will find fireworks. Head to the beach or opt for a champagne boat ride to take in the show.
13. Dance the night away at a bar or club
From partying in Monaco to dancing on tables at bars in Nice, the French Riviera is not short of a party scene, especially during the holiday.
14. Soak it all in at a casino
The Casinos are really popular during the festivities for a bit of everything – drinking, dining, entertainment and amazing views of the fireworks (most popular being Casino Ruhl in Nice).
